Spring is here and with it comes longer park hours, warmer temperatures and more people – and wildlife – out in the parks.
- Spring-summer hours: Many parks close at 9 p.m., while others close at sunset. Click here for a full list of park hours.
- Wildlife sightings: The warmer spring months typically accompany an increase in snake sightings, including rattlesnakes.
- Be sure you – and your dog, where permitted – stay on designated trails and remain aware of your surroundings.
- In parks that allow dogs, be sure to keep your pet on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
- If you encounter a snake, remain calm and give it space. Walk away slowly. If a snake is blocking your path, keep at least 6 feet of distance before walking around it.
- Never try to pick up, touch or harm any snake in the park.
- If a snake is in a populated area, contact park staff.
- Ticks: Watch out for ticks clinging to long brush and grasses.
- Wildflowers: Take all the photos you want from marked trails but never pick wildflowers. Please leave them for others to enjoy and to spread their seeds for next season.
- Warmer temperatures: While it’s always important to be prepared, warmer weather makes essentials like water and sunscreen even more important. Learn more about how to prepare before heading out on the trail.
- A good rule of thumb is to bring about 1 liter (32 oz.) of water per hour, per person. Stay hydrated and pack healthy snacks.
- Limit outside activities to the early morning or evening hours when temperatures are coolest and avoid any unnecessary, strenuous activities.
- While outside, be sure to take frequent breaks in shaded or cooler areas.
- If it's too hot, leave Fido at home.
