Think you would enjoy a challenging evening bike ride in the wilderness on empty trails with both a sunset and a view of the distant city lights of Orange County, then join us on this docent-led mountain bike ride that loops through Black Star, Baker and Fremont Canyons. The route features expansive views, as well as the flora and fauna of the Fremont Canyon Nature Preserve and Black Star Canyon Nature Park.

This ride is for experienced off-road riders, in excellent cardio shape, that have some experience with evening/night riding. If you are physically fit and in excellent cardio shape, this is a great opportunity to enjoy this seldom visited wilderness of Orange County.

Reviewing the 1-through-5 Difficulty Ratings will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this level-5 activity on the land. Electric Mountain Bikes of any class or type are not permitted.

We will ride on three single track trails in Baker Canyon before we climb the challenging State Spur Road to Cathedral Rock for the sunset. Cathedral Rock is located at the high point on the south/east ridge of Fremont Canyon; this spot provides views of the Fremont Canyon Wilderness as well as Orange and Los Angeles Counties. The break at Cathedral Rock will allow ample time for slower riders to re-group. We will return to the Red Rocks Staging Area via State Spur and Black Star Canyon Road in twilight/moonlight.

Please note, the ride is approximately 15 miles long with 2800 feet of elevation gain. The route has climbs with some extended steep sections.  The climb to Cathedral Rock is a 3+ mile climb that gains 1500+ feet in elevation (average 9% gradient with a number of steeper pitches).

It is important that participants bring enough food and water for a ride of this length and the weather conditions. This program originates at the Red Rocks Staging Area on Black Star Canyon Road and ventures into the Black Star Wilderness and Fremont Canyon Wilderness Parks to the border of Cleveland National Forest.

Please note that you will be asked to adhere to the following measures in order to participate:
