About the Orange County Crime Victims’ Memorial Design Competition
In observation of 2013 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the County of Orange, the Orange County Board of Supervisors and OC Parks are sponsoring a competition for the design of a new Crime Victims’ Memorial to be installed at a beautiful site within William R. Mason Regional Park. The goal of this competition is to identify an outstanding artistic compliment to the landscape of the park, to create an iconic gathering space that will provide visitors with a space for contemplation, remembrance, and healing. The winning design will be inherently egalitarian and human-scale, expressing the cross-cultural and inter-generational impact of crime on members of our community.
The goal of the competition is to create a memorial feature that will:
Pay tribute to victims of crime.
Promote hope, healing, and remembrance for those touched by crime.
Give voice to those who cannot speak for themselves.
Provide a beautiful feature which complements the landscape of the park.
Create a space of solace and contemplation to facilitate both large gatherings and private visitation.
Provide an opportunity for individual contributions to the site (e.g. inscriptions of names, plaques, or pavers).
This is an open, two-phase competition. The first stage solicits concept drawings and a narrative which fully articulate the designer’s vision for the memorial site within Mason Regional Park. A jury of ten, comprised of two individuals selected by each member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, will select up to five finalists to move on to stage two. The second stage solicits detailed design documents, in plan and elevation view, logo design, and an optional materials board. In addition to submission of these materials, finalists will be asked to present their design concepts to the Jury.
